Walk into almost any Persian home and you'll find a bottle of golab, rosewater, somewhere close by. It goes into tea, into sweets, onto a cool cloth on a hot afternoon, and onto the face. For centuries, Iranian women have used it as a toner and a refresher, long before "facial mist" was a product category.
Today rosewater is in everything from drugstore sprays to luxury serums. So what does it actually do for your skin, and how do you get the most out of it? Here's what we've learned, as a Persian skincare brand built around this ritual.
Where rosewater comes from
Traditional rosewater is made by steam-distilling the petals of Rosa damascena, the Damask rose. Iran has grown this rose for well over a thousand years. Every spring, the town of Qamsar near Kashan holds its golab-giri festival, when families harvest the blooms at dawn and distill them in copper pots. The result is a fragrant water that carries the rose's natural oils and skin-loving plant compounds.
What rosewater does for your skin
Generations of Persian women didn't need a study to know rosewater works. Now science is catching up, and it's finding the same thing: the Damask rose is packed with compounds that soothe, protect and refresh skin.
- Soothes and calms. Rose is a natural anti-inflammatory. Research on rose extracts shows they help calm the signals that cause redness and irritation, which is why rosewater feels so good on flushed, stressed or sensitive skin.
- Protects with antioxidants. Rosewater is rich in polyphenols such as flavonoids and tannins, antioxidants that help defend skin against the everyday stress of sun and pollution that leaves it looking dull and tired.
- Hydrates and tones. A mist of rosewater right after cleansing puts moisture back into the skin and leaves it fresh and balanced, without the tight, stripped feeling of alcohol-based toners.
- Naturally purifying. Rose petal extracts have natural antibacterial properties, making rosewater a gentle, clarifying choice for breakout-prone skin.
- Lifts your mood. Never underestimate scent. The smell of real rose is one reason this ritual has lasted for centuries. A few seconds of misting can feel like a deep breath.
Our modern take: Hydration T
We created Hydration T as our modern take on the Persian rosewater ritual: ancient botanicals blended with modern skincare science. Rose blossom (Rosa damascena) gives it a soft, rose-forward scent. Hyaluronic acid and apple stem cells help skin look plump and dewy, and witch hazel leaves it feeling cool and refreshed, never sticky.
How to choose a good rosewater mist
Not every "rose" spray is the same. Whichever mist you reach for, check the ingredient list:
- Look for real rose, listed as Rosa damascena flower water, extract or oil, not just "fragrance" or "parfum."
- Skip high alcohol content if your skin is dry or sensitive. Alcohol near the top of the list can feel refreshing but dries skin over time.
- Bonus ingredients help. Rosewater on its own is lovely, but pairing it with a humectant like hyaluronic acid helps skin hold on to that moisture instead of letting it evaporate.
5 ways to use rosewater every day

- As a toner. Mist 2–3 times right after cleansing, while skin is still slightly damp.
- Before your face oil. Oil spreads further and sinks in better over damp skin. Mist first, then press in 2–3 drops of Persian T Oil to lock the moisture in.
- As a midday refresh. At your desk, on a flight or after the gym, a few spritzes wake up tired skin, even over makeup.
- To set makeup. A final mist melts powder into skin for a fresh, dewy finish instead of a flat, cakey one.
- To cool down. Keep it in the fridge in summer for an instant cooling moment after a hot day.
Build the full Persian ritual
In Iran, beauty rituals are about slowing down as much as the results. Our 3-Step Radiance Ritual brings that to your bathroom counter: cleanse with the cardamom and green tea Persian T Gel Cleanser, mist with Hydration T, then seal with Persian T Oil. Add a few minutes with a copper gua sha if you want to make it a true moment for yourself.

Rosewater FAQ
Can I use rosewater on my face every day?
Yes. Rosewater is gentle enough for daily use, morning and night, for most skin types. As with any new product, patch test first if your skin is very sensitive.
Is rosewater good for oily skin?
Yes. It hydrates without adding oil, and a light, water-based mist is a great alternative to harsh astringent toners that can make oily skin overcompensate. Follow it with a few drops of a lightweight oil; here's why the right face oil helps balance oily skin.
Should I use rosewater before or after moisturizer?
Before. Mist onto clean skin, then follow with your oil or moisturizer to seal the hydration in. You can also mist again over makeup during the day.
Is rosewater good for breakout-prone skin?
Yes. Its calming and naturally purifying properties make rosewater a gentle everyday choice for breakout-prone skin. For persistent or severe acne, a dermatologist can help you build the right routine.
